Book Club: Week Five

"New to town, Beatrice is expecting her new best friend to be one of the girls she meets on the first day. But instead, the alphabet conspires to seat her next to Jonah, aka Ghost Boy, a quiet loner who hasn't made a new friend since third grade. Something about him, though, gets to Bea, and soon they form an unexpected friendship. It's not romance, exactly - but it's definitely love. Still, Bea can't quite dispel Jonah's gloom and doom - and as she finds out his family history, she understands why. Can Bea help Jonah? Or is he destined to vanish?"

Introduction
This book was really nice to read... until it started to end. The ending to this book makes me angry. It's one of those endings that just kills what could have been a wonderful book. You're so enticed by these characters, and then it all falls to pieces... but not in a good/heart wrenching way. However, if you skip the last 20 or so pages and make up your own ending, this book is wonderful.
***SPOILER ALERT***
As I am rereading what I just wrote for the introduction, I realize that maybe it's just the characters that I liked. I didn't find the story all that magnificent; I just really loved the unique and twisted personalities. I loved her dad's ominous calm in contrast to her mother's calamity, and I loved the mystery that lured around Jonah. I wasn't a huge fan of the Night Lights scenes, nor did I really enjoy the Matthew element to the story. Maybe I've just become one of those readers who needs drama and romance and suspense to be entertained. Was I not the only one who was hoping Jonah would just kiss her and they'd run off to Ocean City and fall in(to the different kind of ) love?? Anyways, what did you think of this book? Overall, I would still say I really enjoyed it. I'll probably have to look into other titles by this author. I would love another story with Bea and Jonah, but Jonah's abrupt ending(AGH) doesn't really allow for that. I suppose I will just have to get over my frustrations with how the plot turned out. Did you enjoy the ending? Did you enjoy the book??? Were you as in love with Jonah as I was? Doesn't his description just sound so... yummy? Who doesn't love them ghostly, icy-eyed boys?

Summary

Overall, I rate this book 3.5 hearts out of 4 hearts. I was longing for so much more, but I was also entirely in love with this book for the two days it took me to devour it. The characters are brilliant, and I loved the writing. Fav quote: "He had deep blue eyes that melted girls like Velveeta in a microwave." I think that quote is probably a good enough reason for you to check out this book.
